Fight Chest Pain and Shortness of breath

Chest pain appears in many forms, ranging from a sharp stab to a dull ache. Sometimes chest pain feels crushing or burning. In certain cases, the pain travels up the neck, into the jaw, and then radiates to the back or down one or both arms.

There are several reasons behind chest pain. The most life-threatening causes involve the heart or lungs. Because chest pain can indicate a serious problem, it’s important to seek immediate medical help.

Shortness of breath occurs when your body’s ability to breathe doesn’t match the brain’s orders to breathe. Ordinarily, your airway, lungs, breathing muscles, heart, and blood vessels work together with the brain to maintain sufficient oxygen levels in the body.

Sometimes there is an imbalance between the brain’s signals to breathe and the abilityto breathe. The brain orders the breathing musclesto work harder, and you feel shortness of breath.

Different Symptoms Of Chest Pain

Symptoms of Chest Pain

Chest pain can cause many different sensations depending on what is triggering the symptom. Often, the cause has nothing to do with your heart.

Though there is no easy way to tell without seeing a doctor

Heart-related chest pain

Although chest pain is often associated with heart disease, many people with heart disease say that experience a vague discomfort that is not necessarily identified as pain. In general, chest discomfort related to a heart attack or another heart problem may be described by or associated with one or more of the following:

  • Pressure, fullness, burning or tightness in your chest
  • Crushing or searing pain that radiates to your back, neck, jaw, shoulders, and one or both arms
  • Pain that lasts more than a few minutes, gets worse with activity, goes away and comes back, or varies in intensity
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cold sweats
  • Dizziness or weakness
  • Nausea or vomiting

Other types of chest pain

It can be difficult to distinguish heart-related chest pain from other types of chest pain. However, chest pain that is less likely due to a heart problem is more often associated with:

  • A sour taste or a sensation of food reentering your mouth
  • Trouble in swallowing
  • Pain that gets better or worse when you change your body position
  • Pain that intensifies when you breathe deeply or cough
  • Tenderness when you push on your chest
  • Pain that is persistently present for many hours

The classic symptoms of heartburn — a painful, burning sensation behind your breastbone — can be caused by problems related to your heart or your stomach.

Diagnosis Of Chest Pain

Seek emergency treatment immediately, if you think you may be having a heart attack and especially if your chest pain is new, unexplained, or lasts more than a few moments.

Your doctor will ask you some questions and your answers can help them diagnose the cause of your chest pain. Be prepared to discuss any related symptoms and to share information about any medications, treatments, or other medical conditions you may have.

Diagnostic tests

  • An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), which records your heart’s electrical activity
  • Blood tests, which measure enzyme levels
  • A chest X-ray, which is used to examine your heart, lungs, and blood vessels
  • An echocardiogram, which uses sound waves to record moving images of the heart
  • An MRI, which is used to look for damage to the heart or aorta
  • Stress tests, which are used to measure your heart function after exertion
  • An angiogram, which is used to look for blockages in specific arteries

Treatment For Chest pain

Treatments for heart-related causes of chest pain include:

  • Medications, which may include nitroglycerin and other medications that open partially closed arteries, clotbusting drugs, or blood thinners
  • Cardiac catheterization, which may involve using balloons or stents to open blocked arteries
  • Surgical repair of the arteries, which is also known as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) or bypass surgery

Treatments for other causes of chest pain include:

  • Lung reinflation for a collapsed lung, which your doctor will perform by inserting a chest tube or related device
  • Antacids or certain procedures for acid reflux and heartburn, which are used to treat the symptoms
  • Anti-anxiety medications, which are used to treat chest pain related to panic attacks

Different Symptoms Of Shortness of Breath (Dyspnea)

Signs that a person is experiencing dyspnea (Shortness of Breath) include:

  • Shortness of breath after exertion or due to a medical condition
  • Feeling smothered or suffocated as a result of breathing difficulties
  • Pain that lasts more than a few minutes, gets worse with activity, goes away and comes back, or varies in intensity
