INFECTIONS
Children develop about six infections on an average in a year. Let us see the presenting symptoms of these infections to correlate with the situation better.
Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI)
Symptoms in URI occur mainly in the nose and the throat. Children, especially under the age group of 5 years, may experience more than three URIs in a year, as their immune system is still developing. This makes it harder for the children to fight against infections.

Symptoms of a UTI include pain or burning sensation during urination, the need to urinate frequently or urgently, bedwetting even though the child is potty trained, belly pain.
Sepsis: Sepsis occurs when the immune system attacks body’s own organs and tissues. It can even damage kidneys, lungs, brain and heart.Fever, shivering, low body temperature, extra sleepiness are a few symptoms of sepsis. Babies under 3 months are more prone to sepsis.
Meningitis/Encephalitis: Meningitis is a term used to describe inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain. It is a life-threatening condition that can lead to permanent brain damage and even death. The main symptoms of meningitis include fever, lethargy and decreased mental status. These symptoms are hard to detect in young children.

Asthma: Asthma is an ongoing inflammation of airways in lungs. Symptoms include episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and tight and uncomfortable feeling in the chest and shortness of breath.
Learning disorders: Learning disorders cannot be cured since it is a lifelong challenge. However, with appropriate interventions and support, a child can achieve success in school, work and other extra-curricular tasks.
Sleep disorders: Children and adolescents need at least nine hours of sleep. Talk to your pediatrician if your child suffers from snoring, difficulty falling asleep, or difficulty in staying awake during the day.
ADHD: Children with ADHD shows signs of inattention, hyperactivity or impulsive behavior. Consult the pediatrician if your kid is in constant motion, does not seem to listen, talks excessively, gets easily distracted or does not finish tasks.
Autism: Autism is a condition that includes impairments in social interactions and communication skills. Consult a pediatrician if your child feels hard to express himself or herself. They may show unusual responses to people along with rigid and repetitive behavior.
Anemia: Anemia means there are not sufficient cells in the body. A child may become pale, irritated, tired with some additional signs such as shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, headaches.
